Don't Look in the Mirror to Find Yourself

We are bombarded every day with messages that tell us to "find ourselves." It is the age-old myth of the journey to discovering who you really are. Christians and non-Christians alike strive to discover their purpose, passion, abilities, style, and talents. Day in and day out we follow the quest to discovering an identity that wasn't designed for us.........wait, that isn't what people say, right? This so-called quest is supposed to be about really finding ourselves, so why did I just claim that it is all a lie? Because Matthew 10:38-39 would say otherwise.

If your first concern is to look after yourself, you'll never find yourself. But if you forget about yourself and look to me, you'll find both yourself and me.

God says that we will never find ourselves if we are looking at ourselves! This totally makes sense too! We didn't create ourselves. God created us, therefore He knows us better than we can ever know ourselves. By choosing to look to God for your identity, you will find who He created you to be. You will never be more satisfied in life than when you get your confidence from Christ alone. You will never be more comfortable being yourself than when you walk hand-in-hand with Jesus. And when you look to God for yourself, you will find Him waiting there too.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. ~Matthew 6:33
