First and foremost, what exactly is worshipping God? The dictionary defines "worship" as reverent honor and homage paid to God or a sacred personage, or to any object regarded as sacred; the object of adoring reverence or regard; to feel an adoring reverence or regard for (any person or thing). So worship is a pretty "religious" term. Whenever people think of the word worship, they probably picture think of church or a Christian concert. But according to the dictionary, worship is not really associated with those places (church and Christian events). So when do you worship and what do you do?
Worship is basically honoring God. Worship is our way to showing Jesus just how much we love Him. Through worship we can praise Jesus and thank Him for everything that He has done in our lives. Yes, we do this at church through singing songs, but worship is SO much more than just that! Worship is a lifestyle. We all choose to put something first in our lives. Whatever we put first is what we worship. So if your whole world revolves around getting concert tickets to your favorite band, then the object of your worship is that band. If your day centers on being popular, then you are worshipping your peers. Worship shows us who or what our number one priority is. So if you walk through your day striving to honor Jesus with your words and actions, then you are worshipping Him. If you walk through you day trying to encourage others and be Jesus to those around you, then you are worshipping Jesus.
Now, is singing at church considered true worship? Absolutely--if you genuinely mean the words that you are singing and put all of your energy into it. If you are just looking around and trying to mimic what everyone else is doing or talk with your friends, then that would not be considered bona fide worship. It is pretty easy to think that there is a certain "formula" to singing in church, but there really isn't! Others may be lifting up there hands or closing their eyes, but you need to focus on what worshipping Jesus means to you. Maybe in your heart, singing to Jesus means you sit down and sing or maybe you do close your eyes or lift your hands. Sometimes while we sing I even pray instead of singing the words. Remember that worship is thanking God for His greatness and power and strength. Don't worry about what others may think. Worship is between you and God--not you and your friend. Also, during your church's worship time it can be pretty easy to get distracted and start thinking about what you are going to do with the rest of your day. Really try to guard against that because through your distracted thoughts, you missed out on a great opportunity to revel in Heaven's rain.
Worshipping God brings a peace and joy to your heart. While you worship Jesus you are reminded of just how great He is and how small you are compared to Him. Worshipping Jesus is a humbling experience. Without God, we are nothing. He has done so much for us so why wouldn't we want to thank Him from the bottom of our hearts and souls? Man, with everything that He has done for me I just want to praise Him all day long! And guess what, the beauty of true life worship is that you can worship Him all day every day. You don't have to stop worshipping Jesus when the band stops. You can keep singing the songs in your head throughout the day and you can talk to Jesus everywhere and all the time! That is pretty powerful--we have 100% access to the God of the Universe who is more powerful than any person! That is pretty radical!
"Worship is a lifestyle. Embrace God fully and let Him embrace you. Don't be afraid to be washed in Heaven's rain."
~Michael W. Smith
When the music fades All is stripped away And I simply come Longing just to bring Something that's of worth That will bless Your heart
I'll bring You more than a song For a song in itself Is not what You have required You search much deeper within Through the way things appear You're looking into my heart
I'm coming back to the heart of worship And it's all about You, It's all about You, Jesus I'm sorry, Lord, for the thing I've made it When it's all about You, It's all about You, Jesus
King of endless worth No one could express How much You deserve Though I'm weak and poor All I have is Yours Every single breath
I'm coming back to the heart of worship And it's all about You, It's all about You, Jesus I'm sorry, Lord, for the thing I've made it And it's all about You, It's all about You, Jesus
"I will praise you, O Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonders. I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High." ~Psalm 9:1-2
